Board game delivery day!
I love it when one of us it actually home to receive deliveries! From our friends over at F2Z Entertainment.. Dead of Winter (sold), Kemet + Expansion (sold), Alchemists, Mice and Mystics, and a new demo game: Code Of Nine!
We’ll be trying out Code of Nines at the Mississauga Central Library this coming Saturday (February 20th, 2016). Hope to see you there!
2016 – Changes and the Quiet Re-opening
Some of you may have noticed that Solid Board Gamers stored only closed for a couple months before quietly reopening. We still answer phone calls, and yes we usually redirect board games requests to other stores in the area, but we aren’t gone. We haven’t stopped ordering games for local (and not so local) customers. We hasn’t removed our listing from Google. The website will continue to have games added and removed (based on availability). Several of us are still very active in the board gaming community and we plan to keep it that way.
There are changes coming in 2016.
We encourage our online followers to find time during your week to turn off your phones, tablets, laptops, etc, etc… … do a digital disconnect and go participate in local board gaming events wherever you are (you may need to keep your devices on to help you find the event though)! The Solid Board Gamers crew will attend and/or organize Mississauga Board Gamers Unite! events as often as possible.
Solid Board Gamers Store is Closing!
Hey Solid Board Gamers Friends and Fans,
It’s been a very busy time in the personal lives of the Solid Board Gamers partners and volunteers, so we’ll be rolling back our operations over the next few months. We regret to inform you that we will be shutting down the online store. As many of of our followers know, Solid Board Gamers is an unpaid part time side project for the partners and volunteers and the project is becoming bigger than we can handle on our own.
A Few Major points:
1. We’re planning a Spring Sale/Auction. More details coming soon via Facebook and Twitter.
2. Our popular board game events will continue as usual. You’ll find them in the Mississauga Board Gamers Unite! group on meetup.com. And via the Studio 89 Calendar
3. There are going to be making immediate changes to our shipping fulfillment times (Please give us 2 weeks to fulfill)
4. The Web store is projected to close by May 2015. There will be no restocks, and we’ll be selling off all our existing stock.
5. We will be taking lists for final orders for every existing customer during the month of March, and we’ll have those orders ship for the first week of April. Please send your lists to solidboardgamers@gmail.com
6. Existing pre-orders will be fulfilled.
7. Kickstarter Projects made by local game designers will still be supported and advertised on our website. For example: Grimslingers Kickstarter by Stephen Gibson (he’s from Ontario Canada, and even did some play-testing at our Studio 89 events!)

The Holidays are coming up and we’re busy making sure our “shelves” are full of great games you can give as gifts!
A couple highlights that arrived this past week:
King of New York Richard Garfield’s new standalone game based on the popular King of Tokyo.
Castles of Mad King Ludwig a new tile laying game from the company that brought you Suburbia and Ultimate Werewolf
Guardians Chronicles a superhero theme co-op adventure game.
Bandu also known as Bausack, it’s a crazy Jenga like game with irregularly shaped pieces and a couple other twists.

Board Game Blues
Several months ago I wrote about RISK:Legacy and how it had blown me out of the water. I mentioned that I had been having a hard time getting into new games, which was why the path was cleared for the awesomeness that is RISK:Legacy.
Well, today, rather than write a about a game I’ve played and what I think about it, I want to talk about my board game blues.
For about 6-7 months now I’ve been in this funk where I just don’t have the motivation to learn new board games. In my group of friends I’m to rulebook guy. You know that guy: he reads the rulebook cover-to-cover before playing and (if no one at the table has played before) is the one to teach the game. He constantly questions the legitimacy of decisions and tactics throughout the game, continually checking with the rulebook.
I’m that guy.
Star Realms, Can you Rule the Stars?
Once again the galaxy is up for grabs. It’s up to you, an opportunist warlord, to unite The Machine Cult, Star Empire, Trade Federation. and the Alien Blob factions in an effort to forge your Star Realm.
Will you be able to form and utilize your empire to rule, before your foe, or will you be reduced to nothing more than a backwater trader?
Star Realms is a science fiction deck-building game that puts you in the role of a small time leader of nothing more than a few trade ships and 2 attack ships in the hope that you will be able to build up a mighty fleet to defeat your enemy. For those of you who are not sure what deck building means, it’s where the central mechanic of the game is to start off with a very limited number of cards and through the process of buying cards – from a large deck that is shared between all players – you build your deck into a larger more powerful one.
I have not had the chance to sit down and really try a deck builder, so when the opportunity arose to try one out, I took it. I was intrigued by the tuck-box with the space tank on it. That evening I played three matches in a row. Suffice it to say I enjoy the game immensely.
